That part of the business story which no one tells you..

Updated: Nov 4, 2022

Director, DhairyaDatalking to a diploma student. She asked me "Maam can I start my own counselling practice after diploma?" And while the simple answer would be "Yes, sure, you have the skillset to practice as a counsellor now. So why not"ot"

The reality is much more complicated.

If you believe that your journey to succeed as a therapist stops after learning how to be good in the therapy room, I am sorry to burst that bubble.

The real world is much more scary and interesting. It challenges you on all the fronts.

From knowledge about taxes to marketing strategy. From employee benefits to increasing the reach of reels, you need to be aware of all. No, you don't need to be a master of all, you can hire people who are good at it. But you do need to know something about everything when you are a leader.

An employee might get to choose the work profile, but the Director does not. This is just a reality check for everyone who looks forward to building their own organization.

Ask yourself, if this is actually what you want. And WHY you want it.

You can work with amazing people, get paid very well and have job security as well. So what is it that enamors you about building your own?

An organization not just needs a good name, it also has to live by it. The victories become the team wins and failures become your responsibilities. You have people depending on you and taking a sudden/unplanned breather is not always possible.

This does not mean having your own practice is not a good idea. It comes with its own benefits. And all the above challenges can be resolved. I do. On daily basis.

But ask yourself first, is it worth It? And are you really ready to know something about every single thing? Are you ready for a life of leading where your actions speak louder than words?

Yesterday, I was talking to a diploma student. She asked me "Ma'am can I start my own counselling practice after diploma?" And while the simple answer would be "Yes, sure, you have the skillset to practice as a counsellor now. So why not"

Its absolutely okay to take a pause, before you make that leap. And when you are ready,I will be here to help.
